Vedic Astrology

The Divine Science

Chandrama manaso Jatha. Chaksho surya Ajayatha.
Mukhad Indras cha Agnis cha. Pranad Vayua aajayatha.

From his mind was born the moon,

From his eyes was born the sun,

From his face was born Indra and Agni,

And from his soul was born the air.

  • Buddhi karma anusarena
Yad bhavam tad bhavati, means “You are what you believe,” or “You become what you believe.”  If, for instance, you believe you are inferior, then you tend to be or become inferior.

“Runanubhanda Rupena Pashu Patni Suta Aalaya
Runakshaye Kshyayaanthi Tatra Parivedana.”

Cattle, wife, children, and home are the result of previous birth bondage. Once the debt is annihilated there is no relationship and hence end of suffering in this Samsara.

Runanubhanda is an existing physical as well as emotional bondage with our contemporaries. And it is in accordance to our Prarabdha Karma. Runanubandha is the only known reason to understand the strange and weird encounters that happen in our lives with people who are near and dear to us. It gives us the soothing reply to the sufferings we encounter in life with a readymade answer in the unfolding of the past life debts. It can be either in the form of a positive or negative credit for the future or a negative or positive debt from the past.

Vyasaya vishnu roopaya vyasroopaya vishanavé
Namovai brahmanidhayé vãsishtaya namonamaha

I hail Thee, Vyasa, again and again

Thou, God in human frame,

Thou, scion of Vasishta’s ancient race,

It is from Thee that all knowledge springs

The mythology speaks of many Vyasas; and it is said that there had been twenty-eight Vyasas before the present Vyasa—Krishna Dvaipayana—took his birth at the end of Dvapara Yuga. Krishna Dvaipayana was born of Parasara Rishi through the Matsyakanya—Satyavathi Devi—under some peculiar and wonderful circumstances. Parasara was a great Jnani and one of the supreme authorities on astrology and his book Parasara Hora is still a textbook on astrology. He has also written a Smriti known as Parasara Smriti which is held in such high esteem that it is quoted by our present-day writers on sociology and ethics. Parasara came to know that a child, conceived at a particular Ghatika or moment of time, would be born as the greatest man of the age, as an Amsa of Lord Vishnu Himself.

On that day, Parasara was travelling in a boat and he spoke to the boatman about the nearing of that auspicious time. The boatman had a daughter who was of age and awaiting marriage. He was impressed with the sanctity and greatness of the Rishi and offered his daughter in marriage to Parasara. Vyasa was born of this union and his birth is said to be due to the blessing of Lord Siva Himself who blessed the union of a sage with a Jnani of the highest order, although of a low caste.
Parashara Muni (Sage) was a Rigvedic Maharishi (seer), and the author of many ancient Indian texts. He is accredited for being the author of the first Purana: Vishnu Purana (before his Son Veda Vyasa wrote it in its present form). He was the grandson of Vashista, the son of Śakti Muni, and the father of Veda Vyasa.

There are several texts which give reference to Parashara as an author/speaker. Modern scholars believe that there were many individuals who used this name throughout time whereas others assert that the same Parashara taught these various texts and the time of writing they varied. The actual sage himself never wrote the texts, he was known as a travelling teacher, and the various texts attributed to him are given in reference to Parashara being the speaker to his student. He is the third member of the Ṛṣi-paramparā of the Advaita Guru Parampara.

Veda means knowledge

Ananta vai Vedah…

Infinite are Vedas. No beginning, no end.

Vedas are our heritage. In them is sorted the essence of all knowledge. Astrology is a branch of Vedas – a Vedang – a limb of the Vedas. In order to understand the reality of astrology, to know the background of this branch of the Vedas, it is appropriate to know the outlines of the Vedic Scheme and the Vedic Universe. The Vedic period 23,927 BC – 8350 BC

The four Vedas :

  1. Rig
  2. Yajur
  3. Sam
  4. Atharva
The six Vedangas :

  1. Shiksha (Phonetics)
  2. Kalpa (Rituals)
  3. Vyakaran (Grammar)
  4. Nirukta (Etymology)
  5. Chhanda (Metres)
  6. Jyotisha (Astrology)
The four Upvedas :
  1. Ayurveda dealing with medicine
  2. Dhanurveda dealing with the art of the warfare
  3. Gandharvaveda dealing with music
  4. Shilpaveda dealing with art and Literature
  • Yaska’s Nirukta (5th century BC) is the oldest Indian linguistic text
  • Panini wrote Ashtadhyayi (4th Century BC) on Vyakaran

Puranas contain the details about the evolution of Astrology. Astrology evolved in Bharatavarsha. The Puranic period 8350 BC – 3000 BC

Jyotish is called Astrology; it is a poor translation of the term Jyotish. The word ‘Astrology’ has been derived from Aster a star, and Logos - reasons / logic. According to Chambers 20th Century Dictionary, the term Astrology meant, originally practical Astronomy : now almost confined to the once – supposed art of science of the influence of the stars on human and terrestrial affairs.

Jyotish is known as knowledge which explained planetary motions and positions and time (Kal) and their effects on all of us.

Usefulness of Astrology :

  • Future planning – Education, profession, marriage etc
  • Enrichment of life – Understanding ups and down in life
  • Maximising of gainful efforts : Taking the maximum out of the good time

Printing and papers are recent innovations. In the past all the knowledge was stored in memory (Human brain). It was Smriti, the knowledgeable memorised phenomenal details. All the knowledge was passed on by the word of mouth Shruti this led to inaccuracies and aberrations in the various accounts.

Destiny / Fate

Is there a thing called fate ? or it is a screen behind which the clever, the crooked, the weak-willed persons hide their misconducts by holding God or karma responsible for their faults. Is Fate a way of shedding responsibilities and claiming redressal of wrong doings by explanations that Nature or Fate compelled them to do what they did ? This dilemma is to be examined in the light of factual analysis.

Those who know Astrology can only indicate in a way what will take place in future. Who else, except the creator God can say with certainty what will definitely happen ? This explanation succinctly puts Fate in its place.
There is a force, call it what you may, that shapes human lives. Vedic Astrology takes a giant intellectual step and identifies this force as karma. The present is conditioned by the past karmas, and the karmas that we do in the present shape our future. That means the present actions will reflect your future life. Be good, do good and receive good. As you sow, so shall you reap

All human actions may be brought under :

  • Kayaka – bodily actions
  • Vachaka – actions by speech
  • Manasika – mental influences

Karma is the law of causality that governs all thoughts, speech and actions. It provides rewards and punishments accordingly. It governs the rebirth  and transmigration process of an individual soul till its merger with Bramhan.

Astrology and Science

Science is defined in a standard dictionary as :
“Knowledge ascertained by observations and experiments critically tested, systematised and brought under general principles”.
Astrology is knowledge that has been ascertained by observations of the planetary movements for centuries. The planetary movements and consequent effects on the animate and inanimate objects, on all aspects of life have been studied and empirically tested by seers and sages who then propounded Astrological laws and dictums. It is the knowledge that is critically tested hundreds and thousands of times every day. Whenever, where ever an astrologer gives a prediction the knowledge of Astrology is put to test. Failed predictions indicate the lack of knowledge of the Astrologer not a short coming of Astrology. The knowledge has since times immemorial been systematised in Hora, Siddhanta, Samhita, Shakun and Prashna disciplines. The science has well laid out principles.

Basics of Astrology

Sanskrit is the mother of all Languages. There are various ways (Paddhati) by which a chart can be calculated and analysed however, Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra is the mother of all those paddhati’s and Maharshi Parasara is the father of Astrology.

Astrology has three divisions :

  1. Hora
  2. Ganita
  3. Samhita
Hora deals with genethliac part while mathematical aspects like planetary movements, strengths etc. are taught by the Ganita branch. Samhita means a collection of compendium of law, code and digest of any branch of learning.
Universe consist many planets and stars, for astrological purpose, 27 stars and 7 planets along with Rahu and Ketu though recognised as planets for astrological delineations are shadowy. These two are nodes of the Moon and are exactly apart 180 degrees mutually. Their positions are formed when the Moon crosses the ecliptic from northern latitude to southern one and vice versa.

Panchanga is the combination of five elements namely Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Karana & Yoga. Many of the festival names are followed by a Tithi like Durga Ashtami, Sri Ram Navami, Sri Krishna Janmashtami, etc

There are 9 planets (7 + Rahu and Ketu), 12 signs and 27 constellations in the Zodiac.

The 27 (Nakshatras) constellations :

The 12 Rashis / Signs :

  1. Mesha - Aries

  7. Tula - Libra
  8. Vrishchika - Scorpio
  9. Dhanus - Sagittarius

The directions of the planets :

The Sun – east

Saturn – west

The Moon – north-west

Mars – south

Mercury – north

Jupiter – north-east

Rahu – south-west

Benefices and malefic :

The Sun, Saturn, Mars decreasing Moon, Rahu and Ketu (the ascending and descending nodes of the Moon) are malefic while the rest are benefices. However, Mercury is a benefice if he joins a benefice.

Planetary governances :

The Sun is the soul of all. The Moon is the mind. Mars is one’s strength. Mercury is speech-giver while Jupiter confers knowledge and happiness. Venus governs semen (potency) while Saturn denotes grief.

Planetary cabinet :

The Sun and Moon are royal planets while Mars is the army chief. Prince is Mercury. The ministerial planets are Jupiter and Venus. Saturn is a servant. Rahu and Ketu form the planetary army.

Planetary complexions :

The Sun is red. The moon is tawny. Mars is blood-red while Mercury is green. Tawny, variegated and dark are Jupiter, Venus and Saturn in their order.

Sex of the planets :

Mercury and Saturn are neuters. The Moon and Venus are females while the Sun, Mars and Jupiter are males.

Primordial compounds :

The Pancha Bhootas like fire, earth, ether, water and air are governed by Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn respectively.

Astrologically speaking, at the base of he thumb is the mount of Venus. At the base of the index is the mount Jupiter. At the base of the middle finger there is the mount of Saturn. And at the base of the ring finger there is the mount of mercury. Similarly, either side of the palm has Mars near the thumb, above the life line, and luna under the little finger, below the heart line. Thus the hand is the location of all the planets.

All the planets have friends, enemies and equals. With the given date of birth, time of birth and place of birth, a horoscope of a native can be calculated. After feeding necessary data as per the requirements astrological software’s can calculate and present the horoscope. However, the Astrologer who has good knowledge in Ganita can do it manually. Many Astrologers calculate manually and draft the yearly Panchanga predicting various events and suggest auspicious days.

Right from 4th century BCE ancient sages, astronomers, astrologers used to predicted celestial events. They believed only 9 planets (Navagraha) influence the people on Earth. May be that is the reason they ignored the rest.

To achieve desired goals choose an auspicious day and start doing hard-work, pray that your hard-work should be fruitful and wait for the results. Traditionally it is called Parishram Prarthana and Prateeksha.

One has to work hard on the basics. Once the basics are clear, Vedic astrology is a very systematic subject. We should first strive to clearly understand the teachings of Maharshis. There is a lot of width and depth in the knowledge taught by Maharshis. Our focus should be on understanding their teachings correctly and not on adding new things to the knowledge that we only superficially understand.

Apatra Dana

Apatra means one who does not deserve or is not worthy. Apatra Dana is also bad.

Apatra Dana is giving alms to an undeserving person like a hypocrite, a cruel man, a drunkard, a thief etc.

Apatra Dana few examples -

* If you give money to a rich man
* If you give power to a Naxalite / Terrorist who will use it in a unlawful way
* If you give shelter to the runaway from the law (Outlawed)
* If you give food to a full stomach (Luxurious Person)
* If you give to an unwholesome (One who follows Adharma)

Adharma = Unlawful, Illegal, Immoral or Opposed to Public Policy

In case of Apatra Dana, not only do you accrue karma on account of your action, but you also get taxed for Pramada (Knowingly Doing Wrong)

Krishna explained in detail three types of dana and showed how Satvika dana is the best.

Datavyamiti yaddanam deeyateanupakarine.

Dese kale cha patra cha tatddanam sattvikam smrutam [Bhagavadgita 17-20]

datavyam - it is one’s duty to give, it - with this idea, yat + danam - a gift which, dese - in a fit place, cha - and, kale - at a suitable time, cha - and (also) patre - on the appearance of a deserving person, an upakarine - on one who is no benefactor, deeyate - is bestowed, tat + danam - that gift, sattivikam - sattvika, smrutam - has been pronounced.
